It is a key agent of climate governance in Gipuzkoa and a multidisciplinary centre that operates within the framework of the Gipuzkoa Strategy to Combat Climate Change (ELCCG).

The aim of the centre is to generate institutional, technical and social capacities to face the impacts of climate change in Gipuzkoa, facilitating and accelerating the eco-innovation necessary for effective socio-ecological transition.

What has been achieved or what are the aims?

The expected impact of Naturklima is to turn Gipuzkoa into a region prepared to face the challenges of climate change through the development of skills and knowledge. In addition, the aim is to create a network of entrepreneurs and innovators in the field of sustainability and the green economy.

1.Creation of the NaturKlima Specialized Centre as a foundation (February 2019).
2.Launch of the First Call for Business Challenges against climate change, adopting the Circular Economy approach. As a result of this call, three Gipuzkoan companies have received funds to develop their new business ideas to prevent and combat climate change in the region.
3.Preparation of strategic plans, documents and reports on Climate Change and the Circular Economy.

Gipuzkoa must join forces and concentrate the talent in our province to develop a coordinated response to the challenge of climate change, engaging the economic and industrial sector, the scientific community and the associative world. The Provincial Government of Gipuzkoa, within the framework of the Etorkizuna Eraikiz programme, plans to launch NaturKlima, the Gipuzkoa Institute of Climate Change. The institute's main function will be to structure a deeper and more extensive network of collaboration and coordination between stakeholders, and it will act as an accelerator in the process of social and ecological transition within the context of the green economy.
NaturKlima is designed as a public multidisciplinary centre for generating institutional, technical and social capacity. The centre's mission is to address the impact of climate change, contributing knowledge, value and wealth to society and the business sector, and to become an accelerator of the social/ecological transition. NaturKlima will help centralise policies for combatting global warming and will promote the circular economy. It will help Gipuzkoa to align its strategy with those of other European centres of excellence.
  • By providing support to the Provincial Government of Gipuzkoa in the analysis, observation and control of the impact of climate change in Gipuzkoa.
  • By working to obtain an accurate diagnosis and galvanise the actions of a broad spectrum of stakeholders in relation to climate change mitigation and adaptation.
  • By guaranteeing the process of assessing and monitoring the progress of Gipuzkoa's Climate Change Strategy.

The functions of NaturKlima - Climate Change Institute are:

  • To act as a Climate Change Observatory.
  • To be a Circular Recycling Hub.
  • To be a Renewable Energy Hub.
  • To galvanise action at a provincial level.
  • To be a Citizen Information and Education Centre.
  • To mobilise European aid and funds.
